Local Police Memorials

Between 1984 and 2009 the Police Memorial Trust has erected 37 local memorials
to 42 police officers killed on duty, normally at or near where they fell.

Below are details of all these memorials, showing the officer's year of death, rank, name, age, force, brief circumstances of death, any national honour or award and location of the memorial.

Fatally stabbed when attacked whilst on surveillance duty.

Beaten and stabbed to death by a mob during large scale rioting.

Queen's Gallantry Medal.

Shot dead when he intervened in an armed robbery while off duty.
Posthumously awarded the

Fatally stabbed when, although off duty, he attempted to arrest a thief.

Beaten and stabbed to death while dealing with a disturbance at night.

Fatally injured when dragged by a stolen car while attempting an arrest.

Greater Manchester Police

Fatally stabbed restraining a suspect terrorist attacking other officers.

Posthumously awarded the

Queen's Gallantry Medal.

West Yorkshire Police

Shot dead trying to arrest a suspect who suddenly produced a gun.

2004 DC Michael Swindells 44

West Midlands Police

Stabbed to death attempting to arrest a violent suspect armed with a knife.

Posthumously awarded the

Queen's Gallantry Medal.

2005 PC Sharon Beshenivsky 38

West Yorkshire Police

Shot dead when confronted by 3 men on arrival at the scene of an armed robbery.

Memorial - Unveiled 2009 at 120, Morley Street, Bradford.

2006 PC Joseph Carroll 46

Northumbria Police

Killed while transporting a prisoner who caused his patrol car to crash.

Memorial - Unveiled 2008 at the Styford Roundabout, A69 near Corbridge.

2007 PC Jonathan Charles Henry 36

Bedfordshire Police

Fatally stabbed attempting to arrest a knifeman attacking people in the street.
